Summer Activities

We know that many Duke students want to take advantage of various academic and extracurricular opportunities during the summer months.  To support these endeavors, we've developed financial aid programs that cover a wide range of summer activities.  We invite you to review the FAQs, info, and links below, and you can always use the navigation links at left.

Summer Eligibility

We offer the opportunity for you to receive institutional financial aid for a maximum of two summer terms, and these two terms need not be consecutive. Full demonstrated need for these terms is met through a combination of work study, loans, and grant funds.  Students may receive federal financial aid for every summer term of enrollment.  There is no separate summer financial aid application.

Summer EFC Determination

The family contribution for Summer I is determined by taking 25% of the prior academic year's parent contribution.  For example, if the parent contribution for the academic year just ending was $10,000, the Summer I contribution would be $2,500.

The family contribution for Summer II is determined by taking 25% of the upcoming academic year's parent contribution.  Applications for financial aid for the upcoming academic year must be complete before any Summer II aid can be awarded.

Summer Earnings Requirement

Some students may be eligible to have their summer earnings expectation (the basis for the Student Contribution) for the academic year replaced with grant funds, depending on their summer activities and federal aid eligibility.  In the academic year following their summer activities, the following students are automatically awarded this funding:
